Water Quality Management Plan Program
In addition to other activities, the Nacogdoches SWCD assists poultry producers in the development of Water Quality Management Plans (WQMPs). Since 2001, the State of Texas requires all poultry producers to have a plan demonstrating what is done with the litter produced on these farms. The goal of the WQMP program is to reduced non-point source agriculture pollution in waters of the State. Reduction in runoff from chicken farms helps improve overall water quality in the state without hampering agricultural production

A WQMP is developed specifically for each poultry farm, taking into account proximity to surface water and variation in farm soils. Aerial photography of the farm is used to generate various maps, while production data is used to estimate the amount of litter produced on-site. Soil samples are taken on farm soils where chicken litter is applied. A litter sample is taken from the farm to determine the nutrient content of the litter. The soil and litter samples are used to determine the optimum amount of litter that may be applied soils on the farm, benefiting the producer without degrading water quality. The only cost in the development of a WQMP is the cost of the soil and litter samples. There may be costs to producer to follow practices specified in the WQMP, such as for mortality management (incinerators, composters, etc.). Cost-share assistance is often available for producers who have a certified WQMP. Please contact the Nacogdoches SWCD for more information on cost-share assistance.
All new poultry farms in Texas, regardless of size, are required by State law to have a certified WQMP. Please contact the Nacogdoches SWCD for assistance if you are unsure about your farm's WQMP status and we will be happy to assist you.
The Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board has additional information about WQMPs on their website.
