Lake Naconiche Lake Naconiche is located near US Highway 59 approximately 13 miles north of Nacogdoches, TX on Naconiche Creek. The initial plan for the lake was developed in 1964. Contruction of the dam was completed in October 2006. The lake will cover about 700 acres and provide for the water needs of Nacogdoches County. Recreational activities, including camping, fishing, and scuba diving, will be additional benefits brought to Nacogdoches County by Lake Naconiche. The Nacogdoches Soil and Water Conservation District partially funded and provided some technical assistance during the development of Lake Naconiche. The Nacogdoches County Commissioners Court and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) also provided funding. The NRCS took the lead in providing technical assistance. Photos of the development of Lake Naconiche are available at the website of Nacogdoches County. Below is a picture of the dam at the lake site:
Additional photos will be added as they become available. Updates on activities at Lake Naconiche, including water impoundments, will be added to this site once they are reported.
Lake Naconiche Update (3-20-2007) In mid-Februrary 2007, a federal spending bill removed funding for Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) watershed projects, of which Lake Naconiche is a part. The dam for the lake was completed in October 2006. The County of Nacogdoches planned to build a park, a campground, a swimming area, and a boat dock. These projects were put on hold after it was announced that NRCS watershed projects were no longer funded. On March 14th, 2007, NRCS agreed to reimburse the county for grass planting on the Lake Naconiche Dam, freeing some county funds for contruction of the park. Legislative representatives at all levels continue to seek additional funding for the completion of the lake. We will attempt to post up-to-date information on this web page regarding Lake Naconiche's status. Update (3-27-2007) Currently, a contractor is being sought to plant Jiggs Bermuda as a permanent grass cover on the Lake Naconiche Dam. Update (4-4-2007) The NRCS noted that money for watershed projects had actually not been eliminated by Congress. The allocated money for the completion of Lake Naconiche was therefore available. A contractor was located to plant bermuda grass on the dam. Work will continue on the lake thanks to the continued availability of federal dollars. Water impoundment can begin once the grass is established. The Lake Naconiche Dam has been sprigged with Jiggs Bermudagrass. Local rainfall has hopefully enhanced the ability of the sprigs to take root. Construction on the boat ramp, fishing pier, and campground will begin soon.
